The San Diego Chargers have promoted secondary coach Steve Wilks to assistant head coach-secondary.
“Steve has done an outstanding job with our secondary since he’s been here and now we’re going to be asking even more of him,” said head coach Norv Turner.
“I’m excited about the opportunity,” Wilks said. “It’s a chance for me to grow and expand my abilities and gain valuable experience.”
San Diego’s pass defense has vastly improved with Wilks as secondary coach. The year prior to his arrival, the Chargers ranked 31st in the NFL against the pass.
In 2009, his first with the team, the Bolts improved 20 spots to rank 11th, before leading the NFL in 2010 in both pass defense and total defense. The opponent’s passer rating against San Diego’s defense in 2010 was the league’s fourth-lowest (76.2), and the Chargers allowed the fifth-fewest touchdown passes in the NFL (18).
