Source: Eagles request to interview Bears assistant
The Philadelphia Eagles have requested permission to interview Chicago Bears defensive backs coach Jon Hoke for their vacant defensive coordinator job, FOXSports.com has learned. The Eagles dismissed defensive coordinator Sean McDermott a few days after their wild-card playoff loss to the visiting Green Bay Packers.
Hoke, who just finished his second season with the Bears, has been credited by many NFL observers for the rapid improvement of Chicago’s secondary.
Prior to working with the Bears, Hoke spent the previous seven seasons coaching the defensive backs with the Houston Texans.
The only other known candidate to interview for Philadelphia’s defensive coordinator position was former New Orleans Saints defensive backs coach Dennis Allen, who wound up taking the defensive coordinator position with the Denver Broncos.
According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Eagles will look to interview Green Bay Packers secondary (safeties) coach Darren Perry after the Super Bowl for the defensive coordinator job.
The Eagles also have openings for their linebacker and defensive backs coaching jobs.
As first reported by FOXSports.com, the Eagles declined to renew linebackers coach Bill Shuey’s contract. Defensive backs coach Dick Jauron left the team to take the defensive coordinator job with the Cleveland Browns.
