Veteran punter not released for last week's gaffe
When the Washington Redskins decided to part ways with P Hunter Smith, it was believed it was because of a fumbled hold on a potentially game-tying extra point against the visiting Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
“I told Hunter, ‘Hey, I admired the way you stepped up and blamed it on [yourself].’ It was a combination of a snap and a hold. Hunter is the type of guy that took full responsibility for it and as for that, I said, ‘I was going to keep you because of the way you handled yourself.’ In the last 20 punts, I think he’s had two that we consider the hang time that we want, so that’s why we made the change. It had nothing to do with the hold,” Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said.
A source confirmed Smith has yet to be officially be waived, but will be let go on Thursday.
