Former Mississippi State QB Chooses Washington

Kalen DeBoer's coaching staff officially has secured the services of former Mississippi State quarterback Will Rogers, giving the Huskies another highly successful player at that position for the 2024 season.

Rogers, long rumored to be the favorite at QB to join the Huskies from the transfer portal, officially committed to Washington on Friday night, according to ESPN's Pete Thamel.

"I know I have one more crack at it," Rogers told ESPN. "I know I had to do what I had to do to win as many games as possible."

With a year of eligibility remaining, Rogers will have to compete with redshirt freshman Austin Mack and San Diego State transfer Will Haskell for the starting job after junior Dylan Morris announced his intention to transfer earlier in the week.

Rogers finished second in the SEC in career passing yards with 12,315 yards over his four years at Mississippi State. He also is fourth in conference history in touchdown passes with 94. He set 29 school records for the Bulldogs while starting 40 of 43 games.

Now Rogers will head to the West Coast and play in an offense that is expected to lose its starting three wide receivers to the NFL draft, but has talent waiting in the wings behind them.

Sophomore Germie Bernard and redshirt freshman Denzel Boston are expected to assume bigger roles in 2024, while senior Giles Jackson coming back for a sixth college season will add yet another threat.

Rogers received a high recommendation on Washington's offense from his former Mississippi State teammate, current Husky starting running back Dillon Johnson, before making his commitment.

"I told them it's an awesome place to be, an awesome place to play," Johnson told the media on Wednesday. "I definitely put in a good word for them."

With quarterback Michael Penix Jr. off to the draft, as well, Rogers gives the Huskies an experienced option to help bridge the gap as the highly-touted Mack continues to develop after reclassifying and forgoing his senior year of high school to enroll early.
