Jimbo Fisher Firing Rumor: 3 Reasons For Coach Staying
USA TODAY Sports

The Texas A&M Aggies are in dire straits on the football field

Sitting at 5-4 heading into another SEC matchup, the Aggies have just three games left to get the sixth win needed for bowl eligibility.

As a result, Aggies coach Jimbo Fisher has come under fire and has arguably the hottest seat in the country amongst head coaches

Now, according to rumors at GigEm247.com, Texas A&M has plans for Jimbo Fisher's future with the program already in mind.

And it hinges on... the Texas Longhorns?

"As of right now, the total dollar amount, roster management, and the Texas (Longhorns) game next season is what is driving the bus," GigEm247's Jeff Tarpley wrote. "It's what I posted about 2024 and the plan. They don't want to deviate from the plan."

While the buyout total and preservation of a talented roster are indeed important and very justifiable issues of contention when it comes to moving on from Fisher, the idea that a future opponent is also playing a role in their decision-making is... interesting.

The Longhorns, of course, are moving to the SEC next season, and are set to be permanent rivals with the Aggies, alongside LSU and Mississippi State. The Longhorns will also be permanent rivals with Arkansas and Oklahoma.

That said, Tarpley also pointed out that Fisher's continued struggles on the field could be changing that plan.

"I've said that there is a plan but Fisher is altering the plan every time he loses," Tarpley wrote. "So I've never said that him returning was a foregone conclusion... Once again, it's all about Texas."

Whatever the actual plan for Fisher is, should he continue to drop games with the Aggies, remains to be seen.

But if the Aggies are factoring the Longhorns into that decision-making process in any way, that would certainly be odd indeed.
