Texas A&M Starting Safety Announces Intention To Enter Transfer Portal
Maria Lysaker-USA TODAY Sports

Texas A&M has seen many players leave the program after Jimbo Fisher was fired. There was a mass exodus of players, but now that the window has closed, teams have a better idea of what their teams will look like in 2024. Unfortunately, the Aggies aren’t done losing players. Starting safety, Jacoby Mathews announced his intention to enter the spring transfer portal.

Texas A&M To Lose S Jacoby Mathews

The spring transfer portal opens on April 15. It is a small window, only 15 days. Mathews is making sure teams know he will be available. This comes as a shock to many in the college football world. Mathews got a lot of playing time in 2023, racking up 42 tackles, one tackle for loss, one sack, one interception, and five pass breakups. The former five-star recruit will be a hot commodity when the spring portal opens.

Interesting Wrinkle

On3’s Pete Nakos pointed out one small wrinkle in the spring transfer portal. Mathews cannot transfer to any SEC school as he has to go outside of the conference. Many of the top Big Ten teams will likely be chomping at the bit to get Mathews. They don’t have to compete with the SEC for a player, which is a huge advantage. There is a chance he changes his mind between now and then but announcing this early indicates he has made his choice.

Can Texas A&M recover from this mass exodus of players? With Alabama and Michigan proving a coaching change doesn’t mean players leave; it is a tough blow for the program. Head coach Mike Elko has his work cut out for him.
