'He's Facing Amateur Level Competition' - Demetrious Johnson Rips Jake Paul's Latest KO Win Over Ryan Bourland
Nathan Ray Seebeck-USA TODAY Sports

Demetrious Johnson minced no words in sharing his thoughts on Jake Paul's performance in the boxing ring on Saturday.

Paul took on Ryan Bourland in Puerto Rico and completely outclassed Bourland. Paul used his power advantage and activeness en route to overwhelming Bourland and scoring a TKO late in the first round.

While watching the fight, Johnson seemed less than impressed and reflected that in his comments about the fight -- as well as Paul's track record in his time in the sport.

"There is a difference between a professional boxer -- a professional athlete -- and an amateur" Johnson said. "These fights that Jake Paul [is] doing -- not the fights he did against Anderson Silva, Tyron Woodley, Nate Diaz, Tommy Fury -- those fights, he fought against professional athletes. Now the fights he did against Andre August, against Ryan, and [Nate Robinson], those aren't professional fights.

"Ryan was a pro boxer at one point in his life...but now this gentleman, Father Time has gotten to him, and he also hasn't fought in a very long time."

Demetrious Johnson Rips Into Jake Paul's Strength Of Schedule

Paul has come under heavy criticism for the time he's spent as a pro boxer. While he's taken on the likes of Woodley, Silva, Diaz, and Ben Askren, all of them were past their prime and/or grappling specialists. His other opponents outside of Fury do not have the best records as well.

That said, the legendary former UFC and ONE flyweight champion made it clear he did not want to put down Paul's skills in the ring. He, however, has a problem with Paul's mission of trying to become a world champion when he isn't facing the level of competition someone with that mission should.

"He is good. He understands distance, he understands a jab..." Johnson said. "So when I sit back and I watch Jake Paul do these amateur fights, I look at it as an amateur fight. I don't take them as professional fights because he's facing amateur-level competition.

"If they would have said this was a WBO world championship [fight], and Jake Paul would have won this fight and Jake Paul became a champion, do we take that belt seriously?"
