Jose Aldo Targets Big Boxing Fights – Mayweather, Jake Paul, Mike Tyson ?
Jeffrey Swinger-USA TODAY Sports

Jose Aldo has one more fight left on his UFC deal as he considers his next steps.

Aldo reversed his retirement as he prepares to face Jonathan Martinez at UFC 301. He had initially been offered a fight with Dominick Cruz in his hometown, but Martinez was then given the nod. Aldo, the former UFC Featherweight Champion, retired after losing to Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 278 in 2020. Since then, the 37-year-old has been boxing, stating that MMA training is too taxing on his body. Aldo first boxed Jeremy Stephens, securing a majority decision draw last year. In the same year, he secured his first boxing win, beating Esteban Gabriel Espindola via a unanimous decision. That break has done wonders for Aldo’s body as he prepares for his next MMA fight.

Aldo Reacts

“I think I needed a break for my mind and my body. Just due to the amount of demand I put on myself and the tole that it had taken on me training for the past 20 years. I found a discipline I could focus on which was boxing, and I did that for a while and I was able to kind of recover from all the pressure and everything else. Wanting to be the champion and every fight in there, the tole and the demand I put on myself (was significant). Now I feel like I’ve done that, and I’m able to come back,” Aldo said

Aldo will weigh up his options after the fight. Should he perform well, he is open to signing another UFC deal to continue his MMA career. However, there are possible boxing bouts out there. He had been linked with a Floyd Mayweather bout last year. However, terms were not agreed as the fight never went ahead. Aldo is also open to fighting on the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson card. The two square off on July 20, which will air on Netflix, with both fighters reportedly earning over $20 million. Paul made a name for himself by beating former MMA fighters. While he has started focusing on beating pro boxers, he did box Nate Diaz last year.

“That fight with Floyd Mayweather was basically all set and done. Ali (Abdelaziz) was the one that was negotiating that and I don’t really know what happened and it ended up not panning out for us to fight in Saudi Arabia. But there’s a big event on Netflix later this year (with Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson), and hopefully, I can get on that. But we’ll have to see. There’s a lot of options floating,” Aldo added

Aldo is at the tail end of his career, meaning he will be looking to secure the biggest purses. A boxing fight with an influencer is likely to earn him more than a UFC return. Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz will box on June 1, as he could aim to do something similar. With the rise of Misfits, there are opportunities out there.
