Diamondbacks' Pavin Smith is having the weirdest World Series experience

Like most baseball players, Arizona Diamondbacks utility man Pavin Smith has probably waited his entire life for an opportunity to play in the World Series.

Now that he is here and getting that opportunity, he is having one of the most bizarre World Series experiences that a player could ever possibly have.

Technically speaking, and according to the box scores, he has officially appeared in three games in the series, including the Diamondbacks' Game 4 loss to the Texas Rangers on Tuesday night.

The only catch is he hasn't actually gotten a chance to play in the series.

No plate appearances.

No official at-bats.

No trips out into the field to play a position.

Nothing.

He has heard his name get called over the PA system, and then immediately removed from the game.

His three appearances have been three different pinch-hit situations late in games. But every single time he has been announced as a pinch-hitter, it has prompted Rangers manager Bruce Bochy to bring in a left-handed pitcher to face him. Those pitching changes from Bochy have been immediately countered by Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo to lift Smith for a right-handed pinch-hitter.

His first appearance came in the top of the eighth inning Game 2 when he was initially sent in as a pinch hitter for Evan Longoria to face Chris Stratton. But Bochy immediately went to his bullpen to bring in Martin Perez. Smith was then substituted out for Emmanuel Rivera.

It was a similar experience for him in the bottom of the eighth inning in Game 3 when Smith was again sent into hit for Longoria. But when Bochy called on Aroldis Chapman, Rivera was again sent in for the at-bat.

In Tuesday's Game 4, Smith was sent in to pinch hit for Rivera, only to immediately be lifted for Jordan Lawler when Bochy made another change.

That is how you get three appearances and never actually get to play baseball.
