Dodgers Linked to Versatile Free Agent Pitcher From NL West Rival
USA TODAY Sports

The Dodgers are looking all over the league for starting pitching help, and they are expected to land at least two new arms. They want at least one front-line starter but also will be looking to build the rotation out with lower-tiered guys.

They want to be smart about their signings and find guys who fit the team. LA prefers a certain type of starting pitcher, making this a very interesting offseason for them.

ESPN senior writer David Schoenfield listed the Dodgers among possible fits for former San Diego Padres pitcher Nick Martinez.

"He makes sense for any team needing pitching depth -- which, of course, is every team -- and don't discount the idea of some team wanting to make him a full-time starter. He had a 2.32 ERA in his nine starts for the Padres in 2023. The Dodgers and Diamondbacks certainly saw plenty of him in the NL West and both teams need rotation depth."

Per David Schoenfield of ESPN

Martinez was great for the Padres last season, seeing time as both a relief pitcher and starter. LA could use someone like this, and they may prioritize his skill set to fill out their pitching staff.

Martinez had an ERA of 3.43 over 63 appearances last season. He started nine games and was very effective whenever on the mound. Martinez struck out 106 batters over 110.1 innings of work and had a WHIP of 1.26

One thing about the Dodgers is that they love versatility all across the roster. But when a pitcher can perform well in both the bullpen and starting rotation, it adds an extra layer of flexibility for the club.

LA used openers multiple times this past season, in part due to the state of their rotation. But we could see it again, with Martinez being a stretched-out reliever in these games.

Martinez is an intriguing option for the Dodgers this offseason, and he could slot in as their third or fourth starter depending on how things shake out. There is a lot of work to do the rest of the way, but don't discount a guy like Matinez being added.
