Elly De La Cruz of the Cincinnati Reds Pairs Himself with Barry Bonds in the Baseball Record Books
USA TODAY Sports

The Cincinnati Reds split a doubleheader with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday afternoon. They lost game one 4-2 while winning game two, 6-5, in extra-innings.

Despite the one win, Cincinnati has lost seven of its last 10 games to fall to 61-58. With that, they are 3.5 games out of the top spot in the National League Central and 0.5 games back of the third and final wild card spot.

Despite the recent tumble in the standings, the Reds have been a fun team to monitor because of all their young talent, namely rookie Elly De La Cruz.

The powerful De La Cruz had a regrettable first game on Sunday, going 0-for-4 with four strikeouts, but he rebounded with a 2-for-5 effort in game two. He homered and stole a base in that win and his first 58 games in the big leagues have represented one of the best starts to a career in baseball history.

Per ESPN Stats & Info:

Elly De La Cruz reached 10 home runs and 15 stolen bases in the first 58 games of his career.

The only player to debut since 1900 and get there faster was Barry Bonds (57 games).

That's elite company for De La Cruz, who is hitting .264 overall with those 10 homers, 26 RBI and 18 stolen bases. He's now hitting in the middle of the Reds order at the age of just 21.

As for Bonds He is one of the most prolific hitters in baseball history, hitting a major league best 762 career home runs and driving in 1,996. He also stole 514 bases, was a 14-time All-Star, an eight-time Gold Glover and a seven-time MVP.

The Reds are off on Monday but start a new series with the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday at 6:40 p.m. ET.
