Meet the 2024 Cubs Coaching Staff: Craig Counsell's Team Officially Announced
Kamil Krzaczynski-USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Cubs officially named their coaching staff for the 2024 season, a strategic mix led by newly hired manager Craig Counsell. The group includes many familiar faces and a handful of new additions.

Pitching coach Tommy Hottovy and hitting coach Dustin Kelly will return in their respective roles. Third base coach Willie Harris and first base coach Mike Napoli are also back for another season.

Cubs alum Ryan Flaherty will join the staff as the bench coach, a role he previously held with the San Diego Padres. Replacing Andy Green, Flaherty brings a combination of analytical and traditional insights to Chicago. Cubs general manager Carter Hawkins cited Flaherty’s understanding of the game and his collegiate bond with Hawkins at Vanderbilt as invaluable assets.

Meanwhile, the bullpen welcomes Darren Holmes, who has championship experience from his playing days with the New York Yankees. Mark Strittmatter will take over as major league field coordinator, a role tailored to streamline team scheduling and optimize catcher performance.

The hitting staff sees the return of John Mallee. Having led the team’s hitting department during the golden stretch of 2015-17, Mallee rejoins as assistant to Kelly, ready to continue helping the Cubs improve at the plate.

The Cubs' 2024 coaching staff features a balance of new faces and returning ones. Hottavy and Kelly did a nice job with the team in 2023, and adding the expertise of Counsell and Flaherty should improve the club in 2024. Now, it's up to Jed Hoyer to improve the Cubs' roster.
