Mets ace Jacob deGrom 'disillusioned' with current regime?

The New York Mets are eliminated from playoff contention and, thus, wisely shut ace Jacob deGrom down for the rest of the season on Tuesday after he dealt with a handful of injury issues throughout the year, including a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.

It appears that's only part of the story.

SNY's Andy Martino reports deGrom met with owner Steve Cohen and president Sandy Alderson this past spring about a potential contract extension because the 33-year-old can opt out of his current deal after the 2022 campaign, but the two-time National League Cy Young Award winner seemingly surprised Cohen and Alderson with his price tag and later became "as disillusioned with the new regime as he had become with the previous one."

Martino added Cohen and Alderson left those brief discussions "with a feeling of sticker shock."

Interestingly, both deGrom and the Mets can claim to have been correct earlier this year. A fully healthy deGrom became a Most Valuable Player candidate over the first half of the season but couldn't stay healthy and made his last in-game appearance on July 7.

"One rival GM who has long coveted deGrom told me recently that the injuries changed his comfort level, and that he would now be worried about signing him," Martino wrote.

As things stand today, 2022 will be a contract year for deGrom, but the Mets nevertheless look like big winners for not extending him well before the summer months.
