Report: Yankees sign Jay Bruce to minor league deal

The New York Yankees are bringing in slugger Jay Bruce on a minor league deal, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. Bruce will have a $1.35 million salary if he makes the team out of spring training.

He can reportedly earn an additional $50,000 in increments if he makes 400, 450 and 500 plate appearances. If he makes 500 appearances, his salary would top out at $1.5 million.

Bruce has spent the last year-and-a-half with the Philadelphia Phillies, slashing .212/.242/.494 with 18 home runs in 83 games. He has also played for the Cincinnati Reds, New York Mets, Cleveland Indians and Seattle Mariners.

The Yankees could use Bruce at first base or as the team’s designated hitter. He has played both of those positions in the past, but would likely back up Luke Voit and Giancarlo Stanton if he makes the roster.
