Yankees call up former phenom pitcher

The New York Yankees have disappointed their notoriously overcritical fan base this season. Even though they have a .541 winning percentage, the team is struggling in the eyes of fans. In fairness, the Yankees do sit in last place in the AL East despite the respectable record. 

The team's main issue is a rash of injuries to the pitching rotation. 

On Wednesday, Yankees brought up highly touted prospect Deivi Garcia from Triple A Scranton to bolster that staff. The 23-year-old right-hander will initially replace struggling relief pitcher Greg Weissert.

Garcia has had prior opportunities at the big-league level but did not perform up to expectations. In his first stint with the Yankees in 2020, Garcia went 3-2 in six starts with a 4.98 ERA. He only got two opportunities in the bigs in 2021 but gave up seven runs in eight innings. He simply wasn't ready. 

Garcia seemed to mature in the minors last season. However, he still has a lot of development to do, and it looks like the Yankees will now allow him to do that at the MLB level. 

Garcia gives up a lot of runs but also strikes out a lot of batters. He has an 8.44 K/9 ratio in his big league appearances.

If he can learn to work out of difficult situations, trigger more double-play balls and lower his ERA, Garcia could become the pitcher the Yankees expected when they signed the Dominican Republic native in 2015.
