Brendan Schaub Thinks UFC Should Strip Jon Jones Of Heavyweight Title

Brendan Schaub believes Jon Jones should be recognized as the former UFC heavyweight champion.

Jones was expected to put his heavyweight gold on the line against Stipe Miocic in the main event of UFC 295 on November 11. That plan went by the wayside after Jones suffered a torn pectoral muscle in preparation for the title fight.

As a result, surging contenders Sergei Pavlovich and Tom Aspinall will be fighting for the interim UFC Heavyweight Championship inside Madison Square Garden in New York City. Schaub believes both men should be competing for the vacant title, not interim.

The former UFC heavyweight explained why during an episode of "The Schaub Show."

"Jon Jones tore his pec, and I don't mean like a slight tear," Brendan Schaub said. "They're saying he tore his pec off the bone. If you know anything about these injuries, which I do, I've had pec issues, I've had many of friends who were professional athletes who have torn their pec, and when it's completely torn off the bone this is not a fast turnaround time. When your champ's out at least a year with this injury, there should not be an interim title fight. It should just be the vacant belt."

Time will tell how long Jones will be out for, and what the waiting process will be like for the winner of the interim title fight. As it stood before the injury, speculation ran rampant that the Miocic bout could be Jones' last pro MMA outing.

In the words of UFC CEO Dana White, "We'll see how this thing plays out."
