Brendan Schaub Weighs In On Controversial Scorecard In Noche UFC Main Event: 'The UFC Wants More 10-8s'
Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

The judging in the main event of Noche UFC this past Saturday is sure to be used as a case study for years to come.

Judge Mike Bell scored the final round as a 10-8 for Alexa Grasso, leading to a draw where the champion retained her belt.

Had Bell scored the round as a 10-9 to the champion like many expected, Valentina Shevchenko would have regained her flyweight title via split decision.

Giving his reactions to the scorecards, Brendan Schaub said that his issue with the outcome isn't the draw or the use of a 10-8 but the inconsistency shown in the judging.

"I know I'm in the minority here, I'm not mad at draws at all. It's sometimes better than somebody getting screwed. The issue with this is the way the calculate it to get to a draw, that judge that gave it a 10-8 should never work again."

Brendan Schaub Says That Judges Are Encouraged To Score A 10-8 But There Has To Be Consistency

As Schaub and many others have pointed out, the fight had clearer rounds that could be argued as being scored as a 10-8.

In the third round of the fight, Shevchenko had her best moment of the night, locking up a guillotine choke that looked close to ending the contest until Grasso was able to fight out of it.

Though he cut the judges some slack for scoring a 10-8 round, stating that they are encouraged to do so at the moment, Schaub took issue with which rounds were awarded this score.

"Now to their credit, judges are supposed to be more lenient on giving 10-8s. The UFC wants more 10-8s, the commission wants you to give out more 10-8s. If that's a 10-8 round to that dude then Shevchenko should have 10-8 rounds earlier. If that's his judging criteria well if that's a 10-8, where you're getting taken down, rear-naked choke, almost finished the fight, well Shevchenko did the same thing to Grasso in the third round."

Shevchenko won round three on all of the scorecards but Bell was the only judge to score a 10-8 in any of the rounds, prompting the discussion of what he saw in the fifth round compared to the third in choosing what constitutes a 10-8.
