UFC's Alistair Overeem would be 'honored' to fight Jon Jones

Jon Jones might be campaigning for a fight versus UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic or against former heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar, but a different big man would love to face arguably the greatest overall fighter in the history of professional mixed martial arts.

Ahead of Saturday's UFC on ESPN+ 34 show held at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas that will be headlined by Alistair Overeem (46-18-0) battling Augusto Sakai (15-1-1), Overeem tossed his hat in the figurative ring for Jones' debut in the heavyweight division.

“Yes, I would do it,” Overeem told reporters about a potential bout versus the man who vacated the light heavyweight strap back in mid-August, per MMA Junkie. “I think it would be a great fight, and I would feel honored."

Overeem suggested he believes Jones has the skill and power needed to hang with the biggest fighters in the promotion.

“I think he’s a great addition to the heavyweight division," the 40-year-old said. “I’m actually excited. It’s fresh blood. I’ve trained with him. He’s very capable, he’s tough, he’s good, so I’m excited about that development.”

Miocic has cleared the division (he stopped Overeem in the first round at UFC 203 in September 2016) and is unofficially scheduled to next defend the belt against knockout artist Francis Ngannou. While Overeem has won three of his last four contests, a victory over Sakai likely wouldn't propel him above Ngannou or Jones among contenders to the heavyweight throne.

Defeating Jones could, however, put Overeem in line for a future championship opportunity.
