Morant’s Stellar Comeback Fuels Grizzlies Victory Over Hawks

Desmond Bane stood out with 37 points, helping Memphis snap their lack of a three-game winning streak and overcome their earlier 6-19 season start. Bane’s performance, along with his seven rebounds and six assists, played a key role in the team’s uplifted spirit.

“There’s definitely more spirit when you win games,” Bane said. “It is just natural. We’re definitely feeling good about where we’re at, and we’ve got more players coming back to keep it going.”

In a historical performance for the Hawks, Trae Young matched Oscar Robertson’s record by scoring at least 30 points and 10 assists in seven consecutive games, a feat first set between December 1964 and January 1965. Despite Young’s efforts, the Hawks have a mixed record in these games.

Jaren Jackson Jr. also made a notable contribution to Memphis with 20 points. The Grizzlies’ crucial moment came with a 9-0 run, breaking a tie and featuring a highlight floater by Morant over Young. This surge secured their lead, which the Hawks couldn’t close.

Morant’s diverse scoring ability and playmaking were instrumental in the Grizzlies shooting over 50% since his return, marking a first for the season. The team’s improved performance, including 29 assists, reflects Morant’s influence and the team’s growing confidence despite initial doubts.

The Grizzlies also tightened their defense in the second half, reducing the Hawks’ second-chance points significantly. Coach Taylor Jenkins acknowledged the team’s improved commitment and physicality.

“We were down 10 at halftime and I told the team we are guarding pretty well. It was just the second-chance points,” Jenkins said. “There was a better commitment there, a better level of physicality.”

After trailing in the first half, the Grizzlies made a strong comeback, starting the third quarter with a 10-0 run. The Hawks, missing De’Andre Hunter due to knee soreness, couldn’t maintain their early lead.
