Report: Jason Kidd 'top target' for Trail Blazers if they fire Terry Stotts

Los Angeles Lakers assistant Jason Kidd could find himself in a head coaching position next season.

The Hall of Famer is expected to interview for the Boston Celtics' vacant coaching position and will reportedly be a "top target" for the Portland Trail Blazers if they relieve Terry Stotts of his duties, according to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports.

Haynes adds that the Lakers believe Kidd should be a top candidate among all available NBA coaching positions.

The Celtics are in need of a head coach after Danny Ainge retired and Brad Stevens was elevated to president of basketball operations. Stevens will lead Boston's head-coaching search, and former Atlanta Hawks head coach Lloyd Pierce is also among the reported candidates.

Portland's head coaching job isn't available yet, but it's believed Stotts will be relieved of his duties following another first-round playoff exit.

Stotts has been head coach of the Blazers since the 2012-13 campaign. In nine seasons with the 63-year-old at the helm, the Blazers are 402-318 but a disappointing 22-40 in the playoffs.

Kidd entered coaching after a wildly successful playing career in the NBA. He coached the Brooklyn Nets and Milwaukee Bucks before joining the Lakers as an assistant in 2019.
