Victor Wembanyama receives Luka Doncic seal of approval ahead of matchup

Victor Wembanyama will play his first NBA game on Oct. 25, facing off against the Dallas Mavericks. The 7-foot-4 big man has high expectations on his shoulders. Wembanyama has impressed during his preseason outings for the San Antonio Spurs.

Luka Doncic is already a fan. Speaking to ESPN, he shared his amazement at Wembanyama's unique size and skill set.

"It's pretty crazy what he does on the court," Doncic said. "What's he — 2 meters [tall]? Oh, 7-4? No, the things he does for that length, it's unbelievable the way he moves, the way he handles the ball, shoots the ball, and obviously the blocking. So, I've been watching, and he's an amazing player."

Like most teams, Dallas will struggle to deal with Wembanyama's size. His ability to close space instantly will create pressure on shooters all over the floor. On offense, he will attack close-outs off the dribble, hit open threes and provide an elite entry option on the low block. Dallas will need to be physical. Wembanyama isn't accustomed to the physicality of the NBA. It might be the only way to disrupt his flow.

Facing Doncic will be a tough first test. Doncic is an MVP-caliber player who has his own unique approach to the game. Wembanyama can't be expected to guard Doncic straight up. He would struggle to stay in front of him. Instead, Gregg Popovich will likely task his rookie star with rotating from the weak side and affecting shot releases. Or playing a drop-defensive coverage with a focus on taking away rim attempts.

Seeing two elite European talents going head-to-head will be a fun exercise. Both are at different points in their NBA journey. Neither will want to taste defeat on Opening Night. Doncic will need to dive into his "bag" if he wants to outshine Wembanyama. Dallas vs. San Antonio will be must-see TV. We're about to watch history in the making.
