Best Bet: Detroit Lions Jahmyr Gibbs Sinks Minnesota Vikings Defense

Detroit Lions rookie running back Jahmyr Gibbs has been steadily utilized more in Ben Johnson's offense since the bye week. 

As his comfort level has grown, Detroit's 2023 first-round draft pick has silenced many of the critics that questioned general manager Brad Holmes for investing a top draft selection in a running back. 

While Gibbs has enjoyed proving critics wrong, another challenging test awaits the talented running back this week. 

Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores has his unit defending well against the run and are opportunistic in their pass rush efforts. 

Detroit's division rival is allowing an average of 3.7 yards per carry, which ranks fourth in the NFL. 

On the ground, the Lions have recorded 14 rushes of 20 or more yards, which ranks fourth in the league. While Minnesota has only allowed a single explosive rush of over 20 yards, Detroit's offensive line will strive to open up rushing lanes for Gibbs and David Montgomery. 

Play Michigan lead writer Drew Ellis sees Gibbs being able to overcome the Vikings' stout rush defense this week. 

"We’ve seen what the Detroit Lions offense can do with a healthy offensive line. We’ve also seen what Jahmyr Gibbs is capable of. He’s one of the most explosive players in the league, consistently putting together runs or receptions of 20 yards or more," Ellis tells All Lions. "As the season has gone on, Gibbs looks more comfortable in the Detroit offense. His rushing production is up, and he still remains a big threat in the passing game. 

"You never quite know how Gibbs will make his impact, but he’s become reliable for making an impact. Gibbs has tallied at least 73 rushing+receiving yards in seven of his last eight games," Ellis continued. "I like him to do it again on Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings. With a division title on the line, look for the playmakers to step up. Gibbs may be the biggest playmaker the Lions have right now. That is why my best bet is Gibbs going over 72.5 rushing+receiving Yards (-115)."

Johnson opened his media session this week addressing the uniqueness of Flores' defensive scheme. 

"The front seven, they shed blocks really well," said Johnson. "You can tell they stress turnovers. They have so many fumbles already this season and then they tackle really well also. And then the other thing they do is they play very disciplined football. So, when you combine that with the scheme, the fact that their players are playing at such a high level, that’s what makes them so dangerous.”
