Demaryius Thomas' family believes seizure caused former Broncos WR's death

Four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Demaryius Thomas may have died from a seizure, a family member told the Associated Press on Friday.

"He had been suffering from seizures for over a year, and we believe he had a seizure when he was showering," Thomas' cousin LaTonya Bonseigneur told the AP. "He was alone and a friend couldn’t get hold of him, so he called his driver, who has a key because of these seizures, and he went into his home and found him in the shower."

Police told the AP that investigators believed a medical issue was the cause of death.

Thomas, who was going to turn 34 on Christmas day, announced his retirement in June 2021. The 2010 first-round pick ranks second in Denver Broncos history in both receiving yards and receiving touchdowns, earning four trips to the Pro Bowl during his tenure with the team. Thomas was traded to the Houston Texans during the 2017 season and finished his career with brief stints with the New England Patriots and New York Jets.

"We have lost an incredible player and a special person in Demaryius Thomas," the Broncos said in a team statement, "Our hearts and deepest sympathies go out to the Thomas family and all who are grieving this unimaginable loss."
