Did Mitchell Trubisky want to sign with Giants over Steelers?

Veteran quarterback Mitchell Trubisky spent the 2021 season as a backup with the Buffalo Bills after he flamed out as the Chicago Bears' starter. He then put pen to paper on a deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers this past March following the retirement of future Hall of Famer Ben Roethlisberger.

By all accounts, that decision has worked out well for Trubisky, as the 27-year-old may already be Pittsburgh's unofficial QB1 for the upcoming regular season.

Before Trubisky signed with Pittsburgh, though, he was repeatedly linked with the New York Giants for understandable reasons. The Giants hit the figurative reset button after the 2021 campaign and hired then-Bills assistant general manager Joe Schoen to be their new general manager, and Schoen ultimately selected Buffalo offensive coordinator Brian Daboll to be his head coach.

Ahead of Saturday's preseason game at the Jacksonville Jaguars, Trubisky spoke openly about what could have been this summer.

"To be in that offense and stay with them would have been a lot of fun," Trubisky said of Daboll and the Giants, per Mark Maske of the Washington Post. "It would have been an advantage. But this was one of the spots that I had circled in the free agency. … They wanted to have me here, and this is where I wanted to be. So I just felt like when that happened, I felt like it was working out the way it was supposed to. … I felt like this was the best opportunity for me to get back on the field and compete to win a lot of games."

Trubisky could still become a Giants quarterback down the road. Neither Schoen nor Daboll have any direct ties to Big Blue starter Daniel Jones past 2022, and they could turn to Trubisky this coming winter as a "bridge" option before they look for Jones' long-term replacement in the 2023 draft.
