Former NFL GM Explains Holdup on Dalvin Cook Signing

Pro Bowl running back Dalvin Cook, arguably the best player remaining on the open market, is slow-walking his free-agent process, deliberately not rushing to choose his next destination. And now it's understood why.

Appearing Wednesday on NFL Network, former Falcons general manager-turned-analyst Scott Pioli explained that Cook's $2 million guarantee from the Vikings following his June release allows him the luxury of time.

"What that means for Dalvin Cook is, that is his floor. He's guaranteed $2 million whether he plays or not," Pioli said. "If he goes to another team, he has to make more than $2 million in order for him to make any new money, so to speak."

"Dalvin Cook needs to make more new money from [a new team] above $2 million in order for it to feel good to him," he continued. "So the new team that signs Dalvin Cook is going to have to go well above and beyond in year-one compensation and cash to make Dalvin Cook feel better."

Pioli's insight comes on the heels of a report by ESPN's Jeff Darlington stating there's "nothing urgent right now" in regard to Cook's signing decision, "because ultimately he still wants to get a little bit closer to training camp to really nail this down."

Darlington confirmed the Miami Dolphins remain the purported favorite for the 27-year-old, who has an undisclosed offer on the table. The Denver Broncos, New York Jets, and New England Patriots have also been bandied as potential suitors.

But they're all at the mercy of Cook. He's playing the long game — and enjoying it thoroughly.

“I think at every level, I made the right choice when I had the choice to go play ball. The process is fun, you embrace it,” Cook said earlier this week, via Pro Football Talk. “If you don’t want to be wanted by people, then something’s wrong. As long as people want me, I’m good. I know I’m in the right spot. But going through this process has been fun. It’s been different every day, waking up with a different schedule. Just enjoying it. I think when it comes down to it, I just make the right decision. I’ve been doing it all my life.”
