Get To Know the Rookies: T.J. Vasher

With training camp underway and the preseason games approaching, 90 football players are fighting for a spot on a 53-man roster. Plenty of athletes are getting their first opportunity to make their first NFL team. Free agents get a feel for their new home, and rookies show their organizations how they can make an impact. The Dallas Cowboys have a young, inexperienced receiving group, and T.J. Vasher is on the depth chart.

Vasher signed with the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2021. He missed the entire season after suffering an injury in his senior year of college. Going into his first training camp, he seeks to earn a chance to wear the star on his helmet. Not only could he suit up for “America’s Team,” but he will play professional football in his home state.

“He’s done good things. I think he’s made some really big time flash plays, splash plays. He’s had some, really, particularly, in the red zone, which you can see his ability down there. He had some really good plays in scramble drills and things like that. I think like any young player, particularly in his development, is getting the details of the everyday situations.”

Getting to Know T.J. Vasher

T.J. Vasher attended S. H. Rider High School in Wichita Falls, TX. As a senior, the Texas native caught 55 passes for 1,071 yards and nine touchdowns. His performance boosted his status as a four-star recruit, and received plenty of Division I offers. Vasher also played basketball in high school and received scholarships to play college hoops.

He chose to continue his football career at Texas Tech University, playing in Lubbock from 2016-2020. The former Red Raider racked up 1,983 yards on 146 receptions and 21 touchdowns.

Vasher forewent his senior year and declared for the 2021 NFL Draft. The 6-foot-5, 210-pound wide receiver was not selected but signed as an undrafted free agent by the Dallas Cowboys.

His uncle, Nathan Vasher, was a cornerback in the NFL from 2004-2010. In 2005, the former DB was a Pro Bowler and named to an All-Pro Secon-Team.

Dallas traded Amari Cooper and Cedric Wilson in the offseason. Michael Gallup and James Washington are ruled out for training camp, resulting in a shallow WR depth chart. The door of opportunity is open for T.J. Vasher to make a name for himself. However, he has to compete against other young, hungry receivers.

Vasher’s athletic size and frame are noticeable when he steps on the field. If the Cowboys develop him correctly, the wide receiver could play a solid role for the team. Add the fact he was a former two-sport athlete and is locked in to succeed, Vasher is ready to make a statement.
