New England Patriots RB Ty Montgomery is headed to injured reserve, the team announced Tuesday. In a corresponding move, the team elevated WR Lil’Jordan Humphrey up from the practice squad to the active roster.

Montgomery injured his right knee in the final preseason game against the Raiders. Even though he was carted off the field, positive developments throughout the next two weeks led to him being active for the game against Miami.

Montgomery, who will miss at least the next four games, served as the team’s primary running back on passing downs. He scored the only Patriots touchdown of the game last Sunday down in Miami. He also served as the team’s primary kickoff returner.

Fortunately for the Patriots, depth is a strong suit at the running back position. In his absence, it can be expected that Damien Harris and Rhamondre Stevenson will carry most of the load on passing third downs. Pierre Strong Jr. and J.J. Taylor also remain options, although the latter would have to be elevated from the practice squad.

The Patriots take on the 1-0 Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 PM on CBS.
