Rhamondre on Patriots' Offensive Ineptitude: 'Don't Know What Went Wrong'
David Butler II-USA TODAY Sports

Anyone who's ever done most, or all, of the work on a group project at school can sympathize with what Rhamondre Stevenson dealt with this season.

On the New England Patriots' worst offense in 30 years, Stevenson did what he could to burden the load. While his stats took an undeniable dip in his third year in the Patriots' backfield (his average carry of 4.0 was a full point lower than last year's), he was one the team's most consistent offensive weapons before enduring a season-ending ankle injury in Dec. 3's loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.

While few, if any, were planning a seventh Super Bowl parade in New England, this season's four-win slog still snuck up on some, including Stevenson.

“I feel like we had it on paper," Stevenson told the Boston Herald. "We had the pieces to be at least like, an 8-9 or a 9-8 team. I don’t know what went wrong.”

Stevenson was one of the many victims of the gridiron cesspool that emerged in Foxborough this fall, mustering only 307 yards through his first eight games (average carry of 3.2). Glimpses of the old Stevenson began to emerge in the later stages of the season, picking up 312 over his final four (average carry just under 5.3) before his medically induced departure.

The early struggles likely set up a dramatic 2024 for Stevenson, who became the youngest New England rusher to tally four digits since Stevan Ridley in 2012. In an era where even the most explosive rushers have had to jump over the moon and then some to justify their big paydays ... look no further than Stevenson teammate/replacement Ezekiel Elliott's 2023 saga for an example ... the soon-to-be fourth-year runner could well be fighting to change the course of his career.

As he seeks to both make up for lost and future time, Stevenson hopes his next affairs are defined by "relentlessness."

"I think I could have finished some runs a little bit better. But other than that, I think I made good progress and did what I could throughout the season," Stevenson said, per Callahan. "(I want to be) the best I can be, being that leader and being someone that someone wants to pay.”
