Steelers’ Hines Ward Detailed One Thing Mike Tomlin Is Currently Lacking As A Coach

Former Pittsburgh Steelers standout and Super Bowl MVP, Hines Ward, found himself in the spotlight during the week of the big game. While enjoying the festivities in Las Vegas, Ward took a moment to reflect on his legendary coach, Mike Tomlin, and the lingering question of what might be missing from Tomlin's illustrious coaching career.

Steelers' Mike Tomlin Is Lacking One Thing As A Coach

In an interview with The Schmo on YouTube, Ward's insights provided a candid glimpse into the expectations and standards set by the Steelers organization. When asked about Tomlin's coaching legacy and potential areas of improvement, Ward gave an honest, but respectful answer.

“The standard in Pittsburgh is all about winning Super Bowls. We’re very blessed. We won six Super Bowls in our organization. Tied along with the New England Patriots, but we haven’t won in awhile, so that’s the one thing that probably he’s [Mike Tomlin] lacking on his shelfs of great accomplishments and bringing another Super Bowl back to the city of Pittsburgh.”

For Steelers fans, Ward's perspective offers a reminder of the lofty aspirations ingrained within the franchise's culture. While Tomlin's tenure has been marked by consistent success, including numerous playoff appearances and division titles, the pursuit of another Lombardi Trophy remains the ultimate goal.

However, despite all of the regular season success Tomlin has earned, the Steelers have not won a playoff game since the 2016 season. Despite speculation about Ward potentially joining the coaching staff, the Steelers opted for a different direction. Nonetheless, Ward's unwavering support for his former team was evident as he proudly displayed both of his Super Bowl rings at the Legends Party where the interview took place. 

Ward couldn't resist cracking a joke about his newfound love for the vibrant Vegas lifestyle, quipping that he's yet to catch a wink of sleep since arriving. Despite the lack of sleep, Ward was in great spirits and seemed excited to talk to the media about his former team. 

Ward's legacy with the Steelers extends far beyond statistics. During his remarkable 14-season career, he etched his name in the franchise's history books with over 1,000 receptions, 12,083 receiving yards, and 86 touchdowns. His impact transcended mere numbers, embodying the relentless work ethic and determination synonymous with Steelers football. While he hasn't been selected to the Hall of Fame yet, Ward's statistics and everything he did for the game of football will not be ignored. 

As a four-time Pro Bowler, Ward's consistent excellence on the field mirrored the team's ethos of blue-collar grit and perseverance. His contributions were instrumental in two Super Bowl victories, with his crowning moment coming in Super Bowl XL, where he not only helped secure a championship, but also earned the prestigious Super Bowl MVP Award. 

Without Ward's contributions to the team, the Steelers might not have clinched those two championships. While it's not to say they couldn't have won without him, his absence would undoubtedly have made the journey far more challenging. Ward embodied the essence of a true Steeler, prioritizing the team above all else.
