The Pittsburgh Steelers are facing a crucial decision as they search for a new wide receivers coach after parting ways with Frisman Jackson. This vacancy in their coaching staff has raised questions about who will step in to mentor, coach and develop the talented, but troubled wide receivers, Diontae Johnson and George Pickens.

As the hunt for the perfect candidate continues, many Steelers fans and media pundits are echoing the same sentiment. The former star wide receiver Hines Ward should be considered for the role.

Gerry Dulac, a renowned insider covering the Steelers for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, responded to a post where fans were urging the Steelers to consider interviewing Ward for the wide receiver coaching position. Dulac emphasized that Ward had expressed interest in such a role six years ago.

Steelers' Missed An Opportunity In 2018

Back in February 2018, Ward expressed his interest in a coaching job with the Steelers. At that time, the team was in need of a new wide receivers coach following the retirement of Richard Mann after the 2017 season. Ward's desire to rejoin his former team was palpable, and fans were hopeful that the Steelers would make the call.

During an interview on SiriusXM NFL Radio back in 2018, Ward candidly discussed his interest in the coaching position.

"There was some interest, but I can't hire myself. If the opportunity presents itself, it's something where I'd have to sit down and seriously think about it."

Steeler Nation was buzzing with anticipation, hoping to see their beloved former receiver return as a coach. However, the Steelers never called Ward and he went on another route to further his coaching resume.

Despite the optimism surrounding Ward's potential return in 2018, the Steelers decided to go in a different direction, leaving Ward disappointed. Now, in 2023, the Steelers find themselves in a similar predicament with the departure of Jackson. Can Ward be the solution to their coaching woes?

Ward boasts a wealth of coaching experience since his retirement from playing in the NFL. However, the key question remains whether he can handle the unique challenges presented by Johnson and Pickens, two promising, but enigmatic wide receivers.

Ward's career was marked by a team-first mentality and a gritty, do-everything attitude that epitomized the spirit of the Steelers. These qualities made him a beloved figure in Pittsburgh and earned him the respect of fans and teammates alike. If anyone can instill the values and discipline needed to harness the potential of Johnson and Pickens, it would be Ward.

Johnson and Pickens were at the center of controversy and media attention throughout the 2023 season. Their undeniable talent is often overshadowed by off-field issues and inconsistency on the gridiron. Ward's experience as a player who overcame adversity and challenges during his career positions him well to mentor these young receivers.

The Steelers have a storied history of success, and their fans are yearning for a return to glory. Ward, with his deep connection to the franchise, could be the missing piece needed to rejuvenate the team's spirit and commitment to winning. His presence on the coaching staff could reignite the passion and unity that have defined the Steelers for generations.

As the Steelers embark on their search for a new wide receivers coach, the name of Ward looms large in the hearts of fans and media. While he missed out on the opportunity in 2018, circumstances have come full circle in 2023.

The question remains whether the Steelers will make the call and bring back a beloved figure to lead and mentor their troubled wide receivers. Ward's coaching journey, from hopeful candidate, to the savior the Steelers desperately need, is at the doorstep. Only time will tell if this football fairytale becomes a reality.
