Ducks’ Jakob Silfverberg announces retirement after 2023-24 season

Anaheim Ducks alternate captain Jakob Silfverberg announced Thursday that following the conclusion of the 2023-24 season he will be hanging up the skates and retiring from the NHL.

Silfverberg’s last home game will take place tomorrow, Friday, April 12 against the Calgary Flames.

Silfverberg was oringally selected by the Ottawa Senators at No. 39 overall in the 2009 NHL Draft, he spent a total of two seasons with the Senators before going to Anaheim in 2013 with Stefan Noesen and a first-round selection in the 2014 NHL Draft for Bobby Ryan.

Throughout his career, Silfverberg has tallied 168 goals and 205 assists for 373 points in 817 games over parts of 13 seasons with the Ducks and Senators. The 33-year-old ranks in the Ducks’ all-time regular season and playoff goals and appearances. Silfverberg was Anaheim’s 2022-23 Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy nominee, presented annually to the NHL player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.

“It’s been an honor and privilege to play in the National Hockey League,” said Silfverberg. “I want to thank the Samueli family for being who they are, gracious, community-minded owners that support their team while making a significant impact in our community. Obviously, I wouldn’t be where I am without my teammates, all the trainers and staff that have helped me along the way. Most importantly, thank you to my family who have supported me as I lived out a dream.”

“Thank you to the fans around the league, specifically in Anaheim and Ottawa. To spend 11 years in Orange County playing for the Ducks is something I will cherish every day, thanks in large part to all of you.”

On the international stage, Silfverberg has represented Team Sweden on seven occasions, winning medals at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, 2011 World Championships and 2010 World Juniors. He also represented Sweden at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.
