Five under-the-radar NHL players playing hot right now
Timothy T. Ludwig-USA TODAY Sports

Everyone loves to look at the big-name players that light up the scoreboard, but there have been a few guys that quietly having great performances as of late.

Some of these players have been good all season long, while others have been among the most productive players as of late.

Let’s look at a few unheralded players that have been punching above their weight class this season:

Yegor Sharangovich, C (Calgary Flames)

One of the many reasons the Flames are hanging around the Wild Card spot in the Western Conference is the play of Sharangovich.

The 25-year-old is proving to be a viable asset in since getting traded from the New Jersey Devils at last summer’s draft, especially as of late. Since Dec. 1, Sharangovich has scored six goals and three assists, averaging over a point per game.

The Minsk, Belarus native was on a six-game point streak, scoring a goal in five straight, before getting held off the scoresheet Monday night against the Florida Panthers. This recent surge is a far cry from Sharangovich’s slow start, where he only registered two points in his first 10 games. The winger’s 19 points has him tied with MacKenzie Weegar for fourth on the Flames’ roster.

Sharangovich had a career-high of 46 points with New Jersey in 2021-22, but he’s humming along at an even better 49 points right now. Sharangovich can be a key part of the top line in Calgary alongside Andrew Mangiapane and Elias Lindholm, and that’s exciting for a team still facing a ton of question marks.

Yegor Chinakhov, RW (Columbus Blue Jackets)

There has not been a whole lot to cheer for this season in Columbus, but the touted Blue Jackets’ prospect has been asserting himself as of late. After missing the first part of the season with a back injury, and having a stint with their American Hockey League affiliate, the Cleveland Monsters, Chinakhov has been a vital part of CBJ’s offense.

After struggling to find his legs after returning to Columbus in early November, the Russian-born winger picked up his production over the last couple of weeks.

With injuries to Patrik Laine and captain Boone Jenner, Chinakhov was promoted to the top line with Kirill Marchenko and Dmitri Voronkov and on the top power-play unit. Chinakhov’s numbers took off from there.

Starting off with an impressive three-point performance in a 5-2 win over the St. Louis Blues on Dec. 8, where he posted his second two-goal game of his young career, Chinakhov is running on a five-game point streak, posting 10 points over that span, including a couple of assists in the Jackets’ big win over the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday.

Simon Holmstrom, LW (New York Islanders)

One of the promising young pieces on Long Island, Holmstrom has contributed mightily to the team’s recent surge up the Metropolitan Division standings.

In just 29 games, the 2019 first-round pick has already surpassed his nine-point 2022-23 rookie season. Holmstrom has scored 13 points, eight coming in the past month. He has potted three goals in his last four games, including a shorthanded marker on Tuesday against the Edmonton Oilers.

Holmstrom is not even playing top-six minutes. For most of December, the former HV71 product has been on the third line, centered by Jean-Gabriel Pageau and flanked by Julien Gauthier.

While the 22-year-old has not had many “career-making” performances, his ability to consistently get on the scoresheet in a supporting role gives him room for advancement within the lineup if anyone slips up.

Colton Sissons, C (Nashville Predators)

One story that is getting lost in the shuffle of the Predators’ playoff push is that Sisson is on pace for a career year.

The veteran from North Vancouver is currently tied for fifth on the team in scoring with 16 points through 31 games. If he keeps it up at this rate, Sissons will surpass 30 points, a mark he has reached twice in his 10-year career.

Sissons has continued to show his goal-scoring touch in December. In nine contests, he has posted six points, three of which are goals. The former Kelowna Rocket scored both goals that pushed Nashville by the Montreal Canadiens on Dec. 10, adding a power-play goal last Saturday in a win against the Washington Capitals.

The 30-year-old has been spending a lot of his time on the third line with Yakov Trenin, having either centered Cole Smith or been on the wing of Cody Glass. However, he has been creating a lot of chances while on the top power-play unit.

Alexander Kerfoot, C (Arizona Coyotes)

Along with the team’s surprising season, Kerfoot is having a great first year with the Coyotes. After four seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Kerfoot signed a two-year deal with Arizona, and it has sparked the 29-year-old to provide both veteran experience and production for a team battling for a Wild Card spot in the Western Conference.

While he only has two goals this season, Kerfoot’s playmaking abilities has placed him on the scoresheet in spurts. Right after American Thanksgiving, the former Harvard standout went on a four-game point streak, scoring nine points in that stretch.

Kerfoot has slowed down in recent weeks, though he saw some quality ice time last Saturday against the Buffalo Sabres. He was on a line with Nick Schmaltz and Clayton Keller, picking up an apple in a 2-0 win. For the most part, Kerfoot has been hanging around the bottom six, playing with Michael Carcone and Jack McBain.

Nevertheless, if Kerfoot can continue to produce, he will have his best season in two years, helping Arizona (dare I say) make it to the postseason.
