Game Highlights 53.0: Boston Bruins beat Edmonton Oilers 6-5 in overtime
? Perry Nelson-USA TODAY Sports

That was certainly an exciting one.

The Edmonton Oilers hosted the Boston Bruins on Wednesday and came back from a 4-1 deficit to force overtime but wound up losing by a score of 6-5 in the extra frame. Below are the highlights from the game.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

The Bruins opened up the scoring just a couple of minutes into the game after Ryan McLeod took a tripping penalty in his first shift.

Warren Foegele knotted the score at 1-1 later in the first frame. The Bruins weren’t able to break the puck out of their own zone and Foegele dragged it to the net and shoved a goal past Jeremy Swayman.

The Bruins took command of the game during the second period. Just 25 seconds into the frame, Brad Marchand came down the wing and wired his 26th goal of the year through Skinner.

A few minutes later, the Bruins extended their lead to 3-1 when a shot along the ice from the point was redirected past a screened Skinner.

Local product Jake DeBrusk put Boston up 4-1 later in the second period when he picked up a rebound after a shot from the point and buried it into the open net.

The Oilers cut Boston’s lead to 4-2 before the end of the second period to make things interesting heading into the third. It was Foegele again, this time potting his 13th goal of the season.

A few minutes into the third period, Mattias Janmark brought the score to 4-3 with his second goal in as many games. Janmark scored just one goal in his first 40 games this season and now has goals in back-to-back games.

Just one minute after Janmark’s goal, Corey Perry knotted the score at 4-4 when he buried a rebound past Jeremy Swayman.

The Bruins jumped back out in front in the latter part of the third period after a terrible breakout effort from the Oilers. David Pastrnak picked up the puck just inside Edmonton’s blueline, walked it out into the high slot, and sniped a shot past Skinner for his 36th goal of the season.

That lead lasted for under one minute as Zach Hyman tied the score at 5-5 shortly after with his 34th goal of the season.

The Oilers had a prime opportunity to win the game in overtime as Boston forward James van Riemsdyk was penalized for tripping late in the third period. The Bruins killed off the penalty and JVR was sprung on a breakaway out of the penalty box but Skinner stoned him.

The Bruins finally finished things off later in the overtime period when defenceman Charlie McAvoy grabbed a loose puck in Edmonton’s zone and deked out Skinner before tucking in the game-winner.
