Seravalli: Flames ‘one of a handful of teams’ that could trade for Predators defenceman Tyson Barrie

The Calgary Flames have the potential to trade for veteran offensive defenceman Tyson Barrie on Friday to help fill the holes created by trading Noah Hanifin and Chris Tanev, Daily Faceoff hockey insider Frank Seravalli reported Friday.

Barrie, 32, has 12 points (one goal, 11 assists) while averaging 18:26 of ice time in 35 games with the Predators this season. Seravalli listed the veteran defender at No. 11 on his latest Trade Targets board.

Scoop: The Calgary Flames are one of a handful of teams with the potential to trade for Barrie on Friday. He won’t cost much, but he’s looking to play. Barrie has been grinding through a tough year in Nashville. He’s been a healthy scratch for a big chunk of the year and he’s been given permission to seek a trade. Put simply: When he does play, one of the best power play defensemen of his generation isn’t getting much of a look to create and increase his trade value. Barrie’s agent has been working the phones to try and find a fit at the deadline, so far to no avail. The good news for Barrie is he’s incredibly well respected as a locker room influence, one of the most connected players in the game, and every day that passes he gets just a little bit less expensive on the salary cap.

Barrie managed 55 points in 85 games split between the Predators and Edmonton Oilers in the 2022–23 season. He was included in a major trade ahead of the 2023 trade deadline that saw Mattias Ekholm head to Edmonton in exchange for Barrie, Reid Schaefer, a 2023 1st, and a 2024 4th.

The Flames could use another defender after parting ways with both members of their top pairing in separate deals with the Dallas Stars and Vegas Golden Knights. Barrie is an experienced right-shot D-man with plenty of experience running a power-play unit.

As it currently stands, the Flames’ group of seven defencemen includes MacKenzie Weegar, Rasmus Andersson, Oliver Kylington, Daniil Miromanov, Brayden Pachal, Joel Hanley, and Dennis Gilbert. After being acquired in the Hanifin deal with Vegas, Miromanov is expected to join the Flames in time for Saturday’s game against the Florida Panthers.

The Flames now have 25 selections in the next three drafts, with another 2026 third-round pick possible if the Stars reach the 2024 Stanley Cup Final. They have a bit of capital to play with going forward, whether it be at the draft or in future trades.
