Former Manchester United captain Steve Bruce says the club is in a "desperate situation".

Bruce was speaking after United were dumped out of Europe following their Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich.

"The fans have shown a level of patience, but there's huge disappointment," he told BBC Sport.

"It seemed like a resignation it was over, there was never a cup tie atmosphere and there was never an intensity to try and win the game. Bayern did enough and just cruised through it and unfortunately United just didn't show any real threat.

"When the draw came out, everyone thought it was a real decent draw. To go out on a whimper like they have and they've got to dig deep and find something because the games are coming thick and fast at the minute up to Christmas.

"They've got Liverpool at the weekend and there's no bigger tie in England than that one. They've got a chance to bounce back, but they look like a team that is injury ravaged again. You look at who they're bringing on and you feel for the young lads. It's a desperate situation at the minute.

"As we have said many times with United they always look like they're two games away from a crisis and the ability of Erik ten Hag now is to try and lift the spirits of everyone and the only way you can do that is getting a result.

"It's a desperate situation they find themselves in."
