'I’m not a centre back' – Levi Colwill on his season of development

Levi Colwill has been one of the big beneficiaries from Mauricio Pochettino’s arrival at Chelsea.

He was out on loan last season, but since Pochettino arrived he’s been catapulted into first team action, playing mainly at left back but barely ever being out of the team.

It can’t have been easy learning a new position on the fly, and it was interesting to read his interview on the Chelsea website talking about his season so far and his relationship with his manager:

“I’ve come out of my shell a lot more this season,” Colwill mused as he looked back on a successful campaign.

“Last season, I was a lot quieter, but this season, with a group of players similar in age, and new boys coming in, I’ve tried to help everyone as much as I can and put an arm around them.

“I think people have seen that in the changing room. I am here to help and any knowledge I can pass on I will. There are a few leaders in the changing room and we’ve got to help as much as we can.

“I’m playing in a different position – everyone knows I’m a centre-back – but I am trying to help the team and learn as much as I can to help me in the future.

With Marc Cucurella out for a while and Ben Chilwell still not fit, Colwill’s starting position at left back is secured. It may not be where he wants to end up long term, but this season’s experience will be fantastic for his career as a whole, and it will be a useful tool to have for years to come.
