Despite Janel Grant Lawsuit, Netflix Is Moving Forward With Vince McMahon Documentary

Despite the horrific lawsuit that he faces, the docuseries on the life and career of Vince McMahon appears to be slated to premiere this year after years of development.

The project

WWE first announced during its third-quarter 2020 financials call that they had teamed up with Netflix to air it with Bill Simmons serving as the executive producer. Chris Smith, best known for Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened, was named the director.

At the time, WWE touted it would be the highest-budgeted Netflix docuseries of all time. Simmons previously confirmed that while McMahon will get to look at clips, he won’t be able to give notes before the final cut of the docuseries.

Some people thought that WWE would nix the project since they’re trying to separate themselves from McMahon due to the Janel Grant lawsuit. In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported that the six-part series is still in the works.

Meltzer wrote, “Some thought that with the Netflix $5.2 billion deal with TKO and the Janel Grant lawsuit, maybe Netflix would just scrap the thing. That isn’t the case, but they obviously have to change the direction based on what happened.”

At one point, it was going to be out sooner. While it won’t be out during WrestleMania season, “it is still planned to be released in 2024, but no time frame is finalized.”
