During a recent interview with WrestleZone Managing Editor Bill Pritchard, Gisele Shaw explained why she has chosen to not only embrace the word, but also make it a defining characteristic of her wrestling persona — “The Quintessential Diva.”
“So when I started wrestling, obviously the word diva had such a bad connotation to it [in some circles]. It is kind of nice that people mention that I reclaimed it or put a positive spin to it. For me, growing up, the ‘diva’ meant so much to me. I looked up to these people who were strong, confident women, who would just weren’t given the opportunity, let’s say. I feel like it’s kind of nice that I’m representing that,” Shaw said.
“And I go, ‘You know what? Being a diva means that you’re beautiful, confident, strong, independent, and you can kick butt in the ring.’ So, hopefully, people see that now and then they’re like, ‘Okay, let’s not have the dirty, bad connotation for the diva.’ Turn it around.”
