Former NHLer Michael Del Zotto joined Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk on Daily Faceoff Live to discuss the concerns surrounding the New York Rangers, which involves their recent slump in the league standings and a small goaltending controversy.
On this day in 2019, the Vancouver Canucks acquired defenceman Luke Schenn and a seventh-round selection in the 2020 NHL draft in exchange for Michael Del Zotto.
Despite a GM and now a coaching change, the Ottawa Senators continue to struggle. Since firing D.J. Smith, the Sens are only 3-4-0, which isn’t terrible, but still very inconsistent for a team that sits in last in their division and needs to start stringing together wins while they have games in hand.
You’d be forgiven if you completely forgot Michael Del Zotto played for the Vancouver Canucks, but the now-retired defenceman shared a funny anecdote about a bizarre moment in time during his tenure with the team in a recent appearance on Spittin’ Chiclets.
The NHL started off the season with an extremely controversial and unpopular decision. Not only did the league ban themed night, they also informed players that they were not allowed to use Pride tape on their sticks.
On Thursday’s episode of "Daily Faceoff LIVE," Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk discussed the salary cap crunch that’s already putting a tight squeeze on NHL teams.
Former first-round pick Michael Del Zotto retired Wednesday after 13 seasons in the league, including his first five with the New York Rangers. Del Zotto, 33, appeared in 26 games in 2021-22 for the Ottawa Senators, his eighth and final team.
33-year-old defenseman Michael Del Zotto announced his retirement on Instagram Wednesday. “Today is a bittersweet day,” Del Zotto said in his Instagram post.
Del Zotto, 33, was drafted by the New York Rangers with the 20th overall pick out of the OHL’s Oshawa Generals in 2008. He would jump to professional hockey after one more season in juniors, recording 37 points in 80 games in 2009-10 and earning All-Rookie Team honors.
With Christmas just around the corner, the Anaheim Ducks might not be expecting too many gifts ahead of the holiday season. In fact, their most anticipated gift might have to wait until next summer, when the NHL Draft Lottery is underway and the Ducks know which draft spot they’ll land in.
The Detroit Red Wings receive Danny O’Regan from Anaheim, and the Florida Panthers receive Givani Smith from Detroit. All three of these players are on league minimum contracts and will almost certainly play the remainder of the season for their new teams' respective AHL affiliates.
Del Zotto, who has over 700 NHL games under his belt, was expected to possibly make the Panthers out of camp this season with the team lacking in depth at the position.
Next to the Panthers’ run to the 1995-96 Stanley Cup Final, last season was easily the most memorable in franchise history.
The Florida Panthers entered free agency expecting to add very little as they were $3 million over the cap. However, the team managed to walk away with a surprisingly decent haul, making arguably the blockbuster trade of the offseason with the acquisition of forward Matthew Tkachuk.
After being bought out on Tuesday, veteran defenseman Michael Del Zotto has found a new landing spot.
The Ottawa Senators waived defenseman Michael Del Zotto on Tuesday for the purposes of a buyout. Del Zotto, 32, was set to make $2.25 million in 2022-23.
For Del Zotto and the Senators, a buyout will result in a $500K cap penalty in 2022-23 and a $750K penalty in 2023-24, but the move saves the team some money and cap space for the upcoming season.
Del Zotto has already cleared waivers once back in December. He became a productive player in Belleville, collecting 27 points in 26 games which earned him a recall back to Ottawa after the trade deadline.
A traveled veteran and a player that wasn’t sure not long ago if he’d been continuing his career in the NHL, the Ottawa Senators gave defenseman Michael Del Zotto a two-year contract in the hopes he could be a strong depth addition for a rebuilding team.
When it comes to the Ottawa Senators and the trade deadline, most point to Nick Paul, Chris Tierney, and the rest of the pending unrestricted free agents as the most likely targets.
Full disclosure, I am a Michael Del Zotto fan. I played against him a bunch growing up in the 1990s in the Greater Toronto Area, and I have been following his career ever since.
Del Zotto, who came into the season with 710 NHL games over 12 seasons under his belt, was signed by Ottawa in order to be a veteran mentor on the team’s blueline.
If you said that at any point this season that the Columbus Blue Jackets’ defensive pairings would be Michael Del Zotto-Seth Jones, Vladislav Gavrikov-Dean Kukan, and Mikko Lehtonen-Scott Harrington, congratulations.
